A Shut Down can look like easy money until a shield stops your hit. That's the detail worth watching first: an active shield protects the landmark, gets used up, and leaves you with a smaller cash payout. Without one, the building takes damage and your reward is higher. If you're fitting regular rolls around a Monopoly Go Partners Event, knowing that difference helps you judge what each attempt actually delivered. You can't see an opponent's full shield supply, though, so don't treat every target as a sure thing.

Give your cash a job

The reason to bother with Shut Downs isn't just the satisfaction of landing a hit. They bring in cash you can put straight into landmark upgrades, helping raise your Net Worth and move your board forward. Think of each attack as another way to fund construction rather than a separate activity you need to master overnight. A blocked attempt still pays something. It's less rewarding, sure, but it isn't a wasted turn. Keep that distinction in mind before spending more dice chasing a bigger result.

What happens on a Railroad

You'll get your opportunity by landing on a Railroad tile. The game then chooses between a Shut Down and its other cash-focused mini-game; you don't get to request an attack beforehand. When a Shut Down appears, you visit another player's board and pick a landmark. Your roll multiplier affects the cash reward, so a larger setting can make the same outcome worth more. There's a catch: it also uses more dice. Raising it doesn't remove shields or make an exposed target appear.

Target's defense Landmark result Cash outcome
Shield available Protected Lower reward
No shield available Damaged Higher reward

Look before you pick

You don't always have to stick with the first opponent shown. Use the available opponent-switching options to check another board or choose a friend when that option appears. Already damaged landmarks, sometimes with smoke, can suggest someone has been taking hits. Useful clue, not proof. They might have collected fresh shields since then. Pick your target with that uncertainty in mind, and remember your own defenses need attention too. Landing on shield-marked tiles replenishes protection, which helps keep your next building upgrade from becoming repair work.

Make your dice stretch

During tournaments that award points for Shut Downs, an unblocked hit generally earns more than a shielded attempt. Check the current scoring before committing a large chunk of dice, rather than assuming every event works the same way. Your broader goals matter as well. Players collecting Mogo stickers may prefer to save rolls for reward milestones instead of pushing every multiplier higher. Set a dice budget, take the cash when it comes, and leave yourself enough rolls to keep playing comfortably.
